"A Night at the Opera" with the Mansfield Philharmonic
Vocal soloists Erica Simmons, Matt Corcoran, and Will Derusha will join the Mansfield Philharmonic and conductor Eldred Marshall for this evening of operatic music. Enjoy Chevalier de Saint-George’s Overture to The Anonymous Lover, Bach’s short but hilarious Coffee Cantata, and then a semi-staged production of Mozart’s one act chamber opera Bastien und Bastienne. Written when Mozart was only 12 years old this mini-opera still shocases Mozart’s knack for parody, whimsy, and excellent vocal melodies. Bastien und Bastienne is a comedic romp through pastoral young love.
Erica Vernice Simmons is a teaching fellow and doctoral candidate at the University of North Texas at Denton from which she will graduate in August 2021. She is also an adjunct professor at Tarrant County College. Her past roles include The Countess in 'Le Nozze di Figaro', Sarah in 'Ragtime the Musical,' and the title role of Josephine in Tom Cipullo’s operetta, 'Josephine,' and solos in Fort Worth Opera’s Sounds of Summertime Concert and His Light Still Shines Virtual Concert. Her upcoming roles in the Fall of 2021 include: Lily in the world premiere of 'A Lily Among Thorns' in The Winspear Opera House with Das Blümlein Project and Charlaine in 'Aint Misbehavin’' with the National Association of Negro Musicians.
Tenor Matthew Corcoran has stunned audiences with his clear and powerful voice. Singing repertoire ranging from early and Baroque styles to the most demanding of Romantic and contemporary classical music, Matt has the unique characteristic of having a powerful voice but enough lyricism and control to sing the most intimate of repertoire. Originally hailing from Ipswich, Massachusetts, Matt now finds himself living and performing in the Dallas/Fort-Worth area. As a performer, Matt has sung a variety of repertoire including opera, oratorio, concert work, chamber music, and art song with groups such as The Dallas Symphony, The Dallas Opera, Voces Intimae, Boston Lyric Opera, and as a two-time Fellow for The Boston Symphony Orchestra’s Tanglewood Festival.
Will Derusha, baritone, is a graduate of the University of North Texas, where he majored in Spanish and Music with a concentration in vocal performance. He has performed professionally in the DFW area for the last 8 years, having had the pleasure of sharing the stage with a number of ensembles, including American Baroque Opera Company, Orchestra of New Spain, and Incarnatus. His most recent operatic engagements include Apollon in Marin Marais’ Alcyone, and Il Mago in Handel’s Rinaldo. He is honored and thrilled to be making his debut this year with Mansfield Philharmonic.
As an orchestral conductor, Eldred Marshall has led several international ensembles: The Ukrainian State Academic Orchestra (Kiev, Ukraine), the Kharkov Youth Symphony (Kharkov, Ukraine), the Pleven Philharmonic Orchestra (Pleven, Bulgaria), the Vidin Philharmonic Orchestra (Vidin, Bulgaria), the Filharmonica Oltenia di Craiova (Craiova, Romania), and the Constanta “Black Sea” Philharmonic Orchestra (Constanta, Romania). In the United States, he has worked as the conductor for the Riverside (CA) Opera Institute’s Children’s Opera Division, and has served as assistant conductor of the Meadows Symphony Orchestra at Southern Methodist University (SMU) and the Opera dell’arte Ensemble (NYC). Further, he has collaborated with the University of North Texas (UNT) Symphony Orchestra.
